While the guests enjoyed an afternoon round of whale watching at the south end of Magdalena Bay, we decided to take the video camera for a dive and show them what lived underwater at the entrance year-round. We found a nice rocky spot where the Pacific meets the Bay to drop in the water and check it out. As my eyes adjusted to the light I was immediately confronted with several large orange fish checking us out. These fish are called garibaldi (Hypsypops rubicundus) and they range from Magdalena Bay, Baja California Sur to Monterey Bay, California. They are members of the family Pomacentridae or damselfishes, and are highly territorial animals. To see numerous bright orange fish with those marvelous chunky faces swimming against the green background of the Pacific is a wonderful sight. To capture them on video and share this fish with the guests who had seen its damselfish cousins in the Gulf of California was a real treat.
