Isla San Jose and Punta Marcial

Today against the stark and beautiful backdrop of the Sierra de La Giganta of the Baja mainland, we started the day early with sightings of Blue Whales. The Blue Whale is the largest animal on earth. We later graduated to Finback, and Bryde's Whales as well. It was a windy day, yet warm with dark clouds overhead and hugging the top of the peaks in the distance. After a morning of whalewatching , we anchored in the small cove at Punta Marcial. The welded tuff of the mountains were laid down millions of years ago as volcanic ash.

We got a close look at the numerous rock types that can be produced from volcanic ash. There was a range from soft crumbly to rocks that had actually partially melted to the surrounding ash material. The geology of the arroyo was as varied as the bird and plant life. While we are here to see whales, the side attractions of the area also caught our eye. We got caught up in the excitement of seeing different birds and plants, and finding fish we didn't see while snorkeling at other places.
