Boca De Soledad, Magdalena Bay

The dunes of Isla Magdalena are a combination of most of the major types of dunes in the world. The sands are for a large part biological sands as opposed to minerals sands. This means that the major component of the sand is marine shells and bones of fish, whales, and sea lions. We have had a chance to see Barchan, Dome, Blowout, Transverse and Longitudinal Dunes. Sand dunes can be absolutely fascinating to explore when we understand the three major factors affecting dune formation. Those factors are wind, vegetation or lack of vegetation and wind speed and direction. With wind changing directions at different times of the year, dunes can build as one type only to be overtaken by another type of dunes with a different season and wind speed. We can analyze and hypothesize all we want as to the origins, composition and physical attributes of dunes, but they can be best summed up as a place of beauty and tranquility, and being in a spot with so few people.
