We are on our way to South Georgia Island! We awoke this morning to a beautiful day of overcast skies, wind on the waves, and salt spray blowing on the decks. Just the kind of day one expects in the Southern Ocean.
As we continue plowing our way along, we are accompanied by several pintado petrels and Antarctic prions. These birds glide so effortlessly over the ever-changing surface of the waves. Always they seem to stay the same distance above the water no matter how high a swell rises or a trough sinks. It's as if they have an invisible cushion riding between them and the water that always stays the same thickness. They are nature's hovercraft and far more efficient than the man-made variety.
It is a day of relaxing, reading, or napping, as we anticipate our arrival tomorrow evening at South Georgia Island.
