Santa Cruz de Lorica, Colombia
Panama and Colombia: Exploring the Caribbean Coast, October 27, 2022
Located on the banks of the fast-flowing River Sinú, Santa Cruz de Lorica is a vestige of a time past. Ornate churches and the elegantly decaying opulence of the architecture left guests considering the commerce from another era, as the iconic marketplace better resembled a souk, perhaps in Damascus. Thirst was quenched with corozo juice, a refreshing local specialty, as a local cumbia band played la pollera colora songs. —Richard McColl, Cultural Specialist

South Georgia Island
Wild Coasts of Argentina, South Georgia, and the Falklands, October 31, 2022
For the evening’s festivities, a very fun and spooky Halloween cocktail party was held, and two special guests were married by Captain Aaron Wood on the back deck at a specially created altar for the occasion. After the vows, the attending company burst into howls, instead of applause. A glorious day. —James Hyde, Undersea Specialist
Gold Harbour, South Georgia Island
Wild Coasts of Argentina, South Georgia, and the Falklands, November 1, 2022
Soon we were headed for the hugely overcrowded beach at Gold Harbour. Wherever one looked there were nothing but southern elephant seals; pups, weaners, mums and bulls. We saw bulls of all sizes, from large to humongous. The huge males were ever attentive to any advances from male outliers – and there were many – who often tried to sneak off and mate with a female. Invariably this elicited an immediate response from the alpha male. More often than not a simple roar would suffice to ward off the intruder, if not, a charge would be enough. If that failed, then they would rise up and tower over each other, grunting and roaring whilst banging into each other’s necks and trying to bite. —Edward Shaw, Naturalist (photo by Russ Evans)
