National Geographic Quest navigated the islands of Belize in search of the best and safest location for daily activities. As high wind prohibited our first stop, our quest continues until we arrived at a pristine location within the Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve. The Turneffe Atoll was declared a national marine reserve by the government of Belize on 22 November 2012. Size: The Atoll itself is approximately 48.3 kilometers long and 16.1 kilometers wide (30 miles long and 10 miles wide), within a marine management area encompassing approximately 131,690 hectares (325,412 acres).
We found two great activities, one snorkeling spot and another to do some Zodiac explorations. On the Zodiac expedition, we learn about the mangrove and is importance not just for the birds but also for keeping the soil from eroding. We saw many juvenile fishes using the roots system and a defense against predators. The snorkeling expedition allowed guest to enjoy the beauty of the underwater world of the Marine Reserve.
