The days go by so fast, especially on these islands, because there is so much to do and see. South Plaza is a very small island in the middle of the Galapagos, although its size is not an obstacle for the many species that have managed to find a niche here. Among them is the Galapagos land iguana which is found all over the island. With their large size and vivid yellow colors, they are one of the best attractions of this place. Living together with marine iguanas they sometimes crossbreed, resulting in infertile offspring with a weird aspect, hence called “Weirdos.”
Many birds can be seen here. One of them is the endemic swallow-tailed gull, a very elegant bird with remarkable red eyes and feet, and the only nocturnal gull on earth. The vegetation here is mostly composed of cacti and portulaca and gives the island an unusual splash of color, with reds and greens predominating.
After the hike we came back on board for quick dip off of the ship to cool off. Then we set sail towards Sante Fe.
In the afternoon we got ready for snorkeling and kayaking. Snorkeling is phenomenal here. Sharks, rays, turtles, and large schools of fish of different sizes and colors can be seen here.
After these activities we were off again, this time for a wet landing on a white sand beach with lots of sea lions. Inland trail led to communities of Santa Fe land iguanas and other animals like snakes, lava lizards, rice rats, finches, doves, and more. Endemic cacti, food and shade for iguanas, also plays an important role in the island’s fauna.
After a great day we came back on board to celebrate life.
