Floreana Island is one of the older Galapagos Islands and it sits on the southeastern end of the archipelago.  The Galapagos Islands are the tips of huge under water volcanoes that are formed by, what geologists call, a hot spot.  The Galapagos hot spot is a volcano producing area that remains stationary on the northwestern end of the archipelago and, as the Nazca plate goes over this area the hot spot makes new volcanoes and the ones on the opposite end then become extinct.
