This is our first day in the rain forest. We’ve concluded the long journey on airplanes and we are settled down on beautiful Delfin II. Today we woke up with the sounds of the rain forest! The birds, the frogs, and a concert performed by thousands of insects are the finest sounds. The sun started to rise, giving a tone of gold to the eastern clouds, the jungle iss bathed with light and the green is revealed. What a way to start a new day.
Here, in the Amazon Rainforest, every minute is important: full of bird sightings and new scenic views of the forest and rivers. Our daily activities started early with a pre-breakfast skiff ride exploring Pahuachiro Caño. (Here in the Amazon region the small rivers tributaries of the larger ones are known as Caños.) These Caños are the best paces for observation of wildlife, especially the elegant black collared hawk. The number of birds and the dense green forest are mind-boggling!
Pahuachiro Caño has tanning rich black water, therefore the surrounding jungle is reflected on the water’s surface. The black water acts as a mirror for the trees. Here in this dream place we spotted the first raptors such as caracaras, and a troop of squirrel monkeys as well as many neotropical birds. One of the best parts of the morning was spending time under a big tree that happens to be a nesting colony of yellow rumped caciques and oropendolas. This was an exiting place due to the colors of the birds and their melodic songs.
The second part of the activities was an introduction on the life forms of the rain forest. This time we landed at casual reserve and explored a trail, we listened to the sounds of the animals, and we got to see some exciting species from very close. With the help of the local people we saw some exotic species that all of us with the unaided eye would have never found!
These local guides went into the forest and suddenly they appeared showing us insects, tarantulas, a turtle and an anaconda! It was an outstanding day with marvelous sightings!
