Morning found National Geographic Venture nestled in the scenic fjord of Gilttoyees Inlet. This scenic waterway is numbered with countless waterfalls that cascade down the steep walls on each side. Intermittent clouds, drops of rain, glimpses of blue sky, and the occasional sunray greeted us as we made our way, soaking, through the raw beauty of the inlet. Throughout the morning, guests were treated to a couple of programs from the naturalist team, including: “Smartphone Photography” from photo instructor Andrew Peacock and “Rainforest Ecology of the Tongass National Forest” by naturalist Lee Moll. Just before lunch, a group of humpback whales close to shore greeted us. The outside deck and bow soon filled with eager eyes as we watched countless showings of beautiful flukes. After lunch, we tucked into the ever so stunning Lowe Inlet. Two rounds of Zodiac cruises brought guests into the calm and beautiful waters in search of wildlife. Harbor seals, eagles, salmon, and the raging Varney Waterfall greeted us on our cruise through this stunning landscape.
