We have arrived in Urbina Bay, located in the center of Isabela Island. We are going to look around this unique ecosystem for Galapagos land iguanas. This walk is taking us through endemic and native vegetation that has regrown here after the volcanic uplift of the sea platform that took place almost 70 years ago. This area is very special because it is located along the slopes of Alcedo Volcano, which had an introduction of feral goats in the past. These mammals fed on the same vegetation as tortoises, which almost caused an ecological catastrophe. The Galapagos National Park started the Isabela Project, an initiative to eradicate the feral goats to protect the endemic land tortoises from Alcedo Volcano. The recovery has been very successful over the last 20 years, and iguanas and tortoises are back in the area. We had the chance to see some on the trails this morning. After the walk, everybody took a quick dip in the sea and enjoyed a very sunny day on the black beach.
Lunch featuring Mexican fare is always a favorite. After the delicious meal, afternoon activities took place, including snorkeling, kayaking, and paddleboarding followed by vigorous hikes and Zodiac rides around the coast of Tagus Cove. We spotted flightless cormorants, Galapagos penguins, different species of fish, sea turtles, Galapagos sea lions, brown pelicans, finches, and mockingbirds.
Back on the ship, we previewed the video of our week, which was prepared by our video chronicler as a souvenir for guests. This was also a special night for the kids on board. They had the chance to watch the movie Coco and enjoyed a delicious pizza night!
This was another amazing day in paradise, surrounded by beautiful people.
