Early this morning, National Geographic Quest paused at Bartlett Cove and embarked Ranger/Naturalist Jake and Cultural Interpreter Mamie, who would spend the day with us to relate the remarkable story of Glacier Bay.
We cruised slowly by South Marble Island and observed Steller sea lions and many species of birds, including two species of puffins. Bald eagles were disturbing some of the nesting birds, and in turn, were harassed by glaucous-winged gulls.
At the end of Tarr Inlet, Margerie Glacier rewarded our patience with “white thunder” when chunks of ice fell from the terminus into the sea.
The water was an amazing shade of blue-green and the scenery was spectacular throughout this fair-weather day. We will have photographs and memories to share for years to come.
