Our first morning in Papua New Guinea found us entering the flooded remains of an ancient caldera. Our anchorage was surrounded by Garove Island, steep and sheathed in a lush coat of greenery. Outrigger canoes paddled out to greet us, decorated with palm fronds for our visit, leading us ashore to the first rhythms of the “sing sing” we were about to enjoy.
We were welcomed warmly with songs, curiosity, and great smiles. One couldn’t help but be dazzled by the extraordinary and very unusual clothing and body decorations as we followed our hosts up a narrow stairway passage to the lava plateau above. Our visit was punctuated by the various clan performances of song and dance. Amazing images were everywhere we walked, as we moved around the area from the school to the lovely church. Sweet connections were made with the many younger locals who walked and spoke with us along the way.
The morning hours melted away and before long it was midday and time to return to our ship, the Oceanic Discoverer. After a delicious lunch we set out for an afternoon of kayaking and swimming off the stern of the ship. While some folks relaxed on board, most found it impossible to resist the warm and inviting water. Locals in their outrigger canoes continued to paddle by to look at us, as curious about us as we were of them.
Sunset arrived as we began our journey onwards, and it was as beautiful as the whole day, dramatic tones with stunning cloud formations. It was a wonderful end to a day rich with experiences, a perfect start to our voyage.
