Looking into the eye of a whale can be a transcendental experience. Some say it is like looking into the eye of god. A timeless connection to the mysteries of the ocean. A crossing over. Today we experienced such intimate contact with an otherworldly being, a boat-friendly California gray whale.

In relatively flat seas at La Entrada, a prominent entrance to the Magdalena Bay lagoon complex from the Pacific Ocean, Zodiac riders were thrilled by the presence of a curious whale. We found ourselves eye to eye with this sentient leviathan, a creature that imperceptibly swims five thousand miles north to suck food out of the arctic seafloor. And we made intimate communication with this earthly voyager at just one point in her wondrous life.

To us this was a spiritual journey, a mirror for how we look at our own lives. And what was it to the whale?
