As we cruised in the waters of the Gulf of California, our vessel encountered a group of blue whales feeding off the north tip of Isla San Jos‚. The whales were staying down for approximately three-and-a-half minutes and then returning to the surface. They made a wonderful close pass near the Sea Lion, giving us yet another flared whale nostril pose!
After just such a pass our marine mammal specialist, Larry Hobbs, leaped up and down on the bow in joy, as he had spotted a rather large patch of blue whale scat. And yes indeed, the Sea Lion made a pass for closer examination and photo opportunities, not to mention a long discussion on fact that the largest mammal on earth -- the blue whale -- feeds mainly on tiny marine animals.
