Hell's Canyon
The sun shone sending its brilliance to glint and glimmer from the polished rocks and golden leaves. As we skimmed through the rapids our wake piled against the shore where cascades of liquid diamonds danced. We came from afar, each bringing our own special way of interpreting the world around us. But as the day past we drew closer, united by shared experiences, the building blocks of understanding. Embraced by the canyon where palisades of basaltic columns created castle walls, we looked upon evidence of ancient seas and shores and of people who came before. We sensed the thrill of wildness as eagles soared above and bighorn sheep moved unafraid to the water's edge to drink. As did they, we paused to replenish and refresh our bodies where we could look upon the river and hear its babbling call. There was a reluctance to leave this pleasant spot, isolated from all but our own companions. But the quest for knowledge drew us back to learn more of those who called the land home before the white man came, of their traditions, problems and goals for the future.
