Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, Oregon and Washington
“It was a Dark and Stormy” afternoon in the Columbia River Gorge. After a morning of visiting the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center Museum, there were choices of a hike or bike ride or scenic tour. We ate lunch and started our afternoon by passing though our last lock on the Columbia River at Bonneville Dam. The clouds were low and despite pouring rain and 60 m/r winds a hardy group watched the grandeur of the Gorge from the lounge. An even hardier group donned coats, hats and gloves and watched from the covered area on the back of the ship. We listened to comments about the waterfalls and history of the gorge. Half of the ship was on deck as the storm of the moment was absolutely exhilarating. Shapes, shadows, silouttes and textures were a photographer’s delight. The sun pierced through the clouds long enough to give us wonderful subdued light on the trees and banks of the Columbia. “We Proceeded On” in the words of William Clark as we head to Astoria tomorrow in the “Wake of Lewis and Clark”.
