Palouse River Canyon
This morning we had the choice of discovering the Palouse River, named Drouillard’s River by the Lewis & Clark expedition, by kayak or Zodiac. Those that kayaked got the chance to enjoy the serenity of the river with little interruption. Those that chose a Zodiac ride were rewarded with an effortless chance to see the birds, mammals and geology of the river canyon. Once everyone was back aboard the Sea Bird we ventured down the river, enjoying a barbecue lunch on deck and an ice cream party during an unseasonably warm afternoon as the ship ventured towards Lower Monumental Dam.
From there we continued down the Snake, hearing about the geology of the Pacific Northwest from our naturalist, Jason Kelley, before coming to the confluence of the Columbia and the Snake below yet another dam, Ice Harbor. Some of us even cheered the rescue of a salmon from the top of the huge gate at the dam just before we made our way out of the lock chamber.
