Snorkeling paradise… was found at a beach known as Chilanos, just north of Cabo San Lucas. Here in the intertidal zone a multitude of brilliantly colored fishes were discovered within 2 meters (6 feet) of the surface. This pair of pink cardinal fishes (Apogon pacifici) was found hiding beneath a ledge seeking refuge from the sun's penetrating rays of light. As a characteristic of most nocturnal fishes their coloration consists of bright reds and or bronze. Many of the cardinal fishes incubate their eggs in their mouths, and it is the male that takes on this responsibility. This nurturing of eggs, as opposed to broadcast spawning, assures that cardinal fishes not only hatch but will have a better chance of growing to maturity.
