Just after breakfast the Sea Bird dropped anchor off the east side of Magdalena Island. The Zodiacs were lowered and we were on our way to our first hike in Baja, California. We hiked over the dunes to a beautiful crescent shaped beach (nick named sand dollar beach by the crew due to the incredible number sand dollars washed up on the shore). As we beach combed, some local fisherman out of San Carlos started working gillnets at the waters edge. Small-scale fishermen generally work out of small boats (pangas) in coastal waters usually in groups of two to four fishermen per boat. They catch many different species of fish and generally have a small catch per set. What they are unable to sell in the local towns, they are able to bring home to their families. The mornings catch consisted of several species of sole, jacks snook and a large butterfly ray.
