As we watched gray whales today, just south of San Carlos on Bah¡a Magdalena, researchers atop a hundred foot water tower looked on. Francisco Ollervides and his assistants are conducting acoustic research on gray whales. Using a theodolite to triangulte the exact position of whales and the boats that watch them, they hope to take a detailed look at how people and whales interact.
Because of the expense of outfitting sections of the bay with hydrophone stations to listen in on whales, Lindblad Expeditions has donated funds toward this endeavor. This research may inform future policy decisions regarding gray whales.
