Española Island

Today it’s Sunday, our first full day in the Galápagos. We arrived to Española Island just in time to see a beautiful sun rise.

After our Breakfast we went to explore a place called Punta Suarez; the weather was just perfect to do our hike. During our walk along the cliffs of the island we encountered many colonies of Nazca boobies courting and nesting, some of them were already raising their chicks. This was a very good day to do bird watching. Every time we looked at the sky we saw a new species of bird, the red-billed tropic birds were the commonest here, we also saw swallow-tailed gulls, Galápagos hawks, frigate birds, Darwin’s finches and many more, this was really the day to experience that animals are not afraid of people in the Galápagos Islands; sea lions were so close to us!.

One of our highlights was to see a big amount of reptiles, since this is their nesting season the marine iguanas had green and red colors on their bodies. Some of us decided to do a Zodiac ride along the coast where we found a lot of boobies fishing and many sea birds nesting along the cliffs.

In the afternoon after our traditional Ecuadorian lunch we went to Gardner bay, here we offered many options to our guests. The most experienced snorkelers went deep water snorkeling along Gardner Islet, in this spot we found big schools of tropical fish as well as some marine invertebrates; the sea lions joined us in our snorkeling and were so curious about us, they probably thought we were just a new type of fish exploring their habitat.

Some of our guests went to explore the coast of Gardner Islet on board a glass bottom boat. Some others went to a long white sandy beach replenished with sea lions for a walk, and the walk was full of surprises: they found a Galápagos hawk trying to take a hermit crab out of its shell and many shore birds. We also offered the chance of exploring the cliffs of Espanola Island by kayak.

After all our activities we went back on board and enjoyed a nice sunset in paradise.
