Santa Cruz Island
It feels good to be in Santa Cruz Island, the place where we have the opportunity of walking through wild tortoises in a very different habitat than the one we have experienced for most of the week. Up in the highlands it is green, it is lush, and it is cool. We encountered different land birds, we saw for the first time tree finches and the beautiful vermillion flycatcher. Guests counted more than twenty tortoises roaring around, feeding on the grass or just resting underneath gigantic Cuban cedars.
The morning had found us at the Charles Darwin Research Station where we met famous Lonesome George and learned about the breeding Land iguana programs. People also loved to walk through Puerto Ayora, a 15,000 population town settled in an amazingly beautiful bay, Academy Bay.
There were choices for everyone on board, from mountain biking to bird watching, tortoise searching and even shopping. A complete and good day!
