Santa Cruz Island
After a beautiful sunrise and a promisingly warm morning, we set foot on one of the most important places in the Galapagos, the Charles Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz Island. The topic of the day was conservation and protection. The Galapagos giant tortoises are the living example of how the dedication of a relatively small group of people, can preserve an endangered species. By the end of today the general conclusion of our guests was that the future of our children depends on our ability to learn to live in harmony with nature and with each other. Sustainable development means that we cannot continue to satisfy our own needs at the expense of those of future generations.
Today we learned that not only in the Galapagos, but all over the world, there is a growing sense of urgency that radical steps are needed to reverse present negative trends. People are more and more worried about the deterioration of their natural and social environment. I am happy that environmental issues have come to the forefront of the global agenda during our generation. To me this means that we have hope.
