The Clearwater River Adventure and Hells Canyon Jet-boating
It was a beautiful sunrise as we approached the cities of Lewiston and Clarkston, after a night of passing through four dams and locks on the Snake River. Stretch class and breakfast proved to be an adequate “wake up” for our long day of exploring Hells Canyon by jet boat and the Clearwater River by bus.
The tours began early with a split in the group heading for the jet boats and the autobus. The Beamer’s Hells Canyon Tour Company led an exciting ride into the depths of Hells Canyon, where eager boaters saw mule deer, big-horned sheep and geologic basalt columns. The break, complete with refreshments, was located at the forest service property along the way, offering views of the Snake River, a museum, canning cellar, and a variety of fruit trees.
The Clearwater River bus excursion was led by a friendly and knowledgeable historian known as Miguel. He took us to many Lewis and Clark historical “hotspots” and read journal passages that humored us with funny tales of the happenings of the Corp. Lunch was in a cozy, small, and friendly town called Kamiah (Cam-eye). Here they had lovely murals and a very informative visitor center.
At the end of our long journey (but not nearly as long as the Corps’ expedition), we made our way back toward Lewiston for the Nez Perce National Historic Park. Here we had a presentation about native life and culture and saw many artifacts of clothing, jewelry, and tools.
After our nice sampling of smoked and peppered fish from Josephson’s Smokehouse in Astoria, we enjoyed recap over cocktails until the savory dinner ensued. Concluding a perfect Saturday adventure with warmth, sunshine, and memorable historical lessons for all!
