Santa Cruz Island

Despite an early start, the humidity was already high when we disembarked after breakfast and headed off to visit the giant tortoise rearing center operated by the Galápagos National Park. Little ones, big ones, saddle-backed and domed…they were all there ready to be fed, hopping from one foot to the other in anticipation (just kidding). But they were certainly aware something special was coming their way soon.

The shops in town got a fair bit of trade a bit later, but then we whisked everyone into the highlands in search of cooler breezes. A few intrepid runners managed to fit in a workout on the way to the restaurant, as did a few mountain bikers. Gatorade was the drink of the day, and the pool was the most desired place to relax upon arrival.

The afternoon was spent either visiting the unique forest which surrounds two collapsed craters named “The Twins” or “Los Gemelos,” or looking for giant tortoises wandering freely in and out of National Park lands and farm lands as they migrate up and down the slopes of the larger islands following the food supply (anything green), itself a consequence of rainfall (fairly heavy this year). The afternoon’s “in” fashion was black Wellingtons with shorts, and they came in very handy, especially for the tortoise search. The area where three big giants were found borders the National Park. As tortoises love to wallow in ponds and pools of mud or water, this is often where they are found, though under bushes seeking shelter from the equatorial sun is another favorite tactic used at this time of year.

The outings were successful, and the coolness of the interior of the ship was a welcomed respite on return from a full day ashore. Despite the long day, the musicians we invited on board for the evening were a big hit, too.

Let's see how much we can fit in tomorrow as well!
