Southern Isabela Island

Did we ever give you a reason why these islands are known as the land of the dragons? To me this is probably the perfect name for an archipelago ruled by reptiles. From the instant you set foot on the islands, you soon realize that time has stopped, and that ancient looking creatures, some of them even taken from magical kingdoms, have found in the Galápagos a perfect place to conquer.

As we walked today through the black lava fields of southern Isabela Island, we couldn’t help but admire the perfect match that all the creatures in this area have found with the environment that surrounds them. Lava fields, apparently unanimated, come to life all of a sudden when these creatures decide to reveal themselves. They give up their perfect camouflage to impose their omnipotence in a place that they own and master. Their almost “royal” posture reveals their lack of fear to humans, and secure movements bring them closer to us humans, as if analyzing our presence on their kingdom.

I have always believed that Galápagos is a place like no other on earth, but when you walk among dragons like we did today, it becomes the place that you imagined in your perfect fantasy land.
