Bartolome Island
We have reached the central part of the enchanted island, and this morning we hiked to the summit of Bartolome island which offers one of the most representative volcanic landscapes in the islands. What you see are parasitic cones scattered all over the place such as tuff and spatter. Once you set foot on this island its seems you are on a different planet, it is of course not ideal conditions for many species of plants and animals, but for pioneering plants this is the perfect environmen. In fact that is the chief function of some of this plants found here, to be part of the succession.
After a nice hike we came back to the ship for breakfast. Afterwards it was time to explore the wonders of the Galápagos marine ecosystem, unique due to many marine currents converging here, bringing a lot nutrients for all the marine life found here.
The afternoon found us in North Seymour island, which is a paradise for sea birds: swallow-tailed gulls along those cliffs, blue footed boobies and the ever present frigate birds with their gular pouches inflated were seen here and there. It was indeed a terrific day.
