A view from the crow’s nest, approaching Bahia Blanca, Argentina
“All hands on deck! It is a beautiful afternoon out on the foredeck of M/S Endeavour” was the call over the P.A system by Bud our Expedition Leader as we approached the pilot station outside the entrance to Bahia Blanca (White Bay). We all gathered outside, forward of the ship’s bridge to soak up the wonderful sunshine and to watch the very big male South American fur seals lounging on each of the channel marker buoys. I suppose the fishing was pretty good for the big males as they were soundly asleep and barely gave our passing lot a glance. South American terns and kelp gulls fished alongside the vessel too, as we made our way through the shallow, clear, aqua marine waters, all the while searching for more birds and/or seals in or above the water.
Tonight will be our last night on board the good ship Endeavour, our home away from home for the past couple of weeks, and soon after tea we began to pack for our next adventures on shore. Some of us are headed still further south to the Valdez Peninsula, while others will go to the dynamic capital city of Buenos Aires. We will remember our South American Odyssey from Brazil to Uruguay and Argentina with fond memories and some exciting stories of adventure and natural beauty.
But I should go back outside now. There is a beautiful sunset hovering over the bay.
