Around the world many people live near populations of gulls who make their presence known by screaming and feeding off garbage. There are even those who refer to gulls as "sky rats." But those people have probably never seen the beautiful ivory gull of the Far North. The ivory gull is a true Arctic resident, breeding in such high latitude areas as Greenland, Franz Josef Land, and Svalbard. And when the weather starts to turn cold in the winter, the ivory gull migrates only a little way south, preferring to spend the long period of darkness at the edge of the winter pack ice. These gulls, which as you can see are much whiter than ivory, are frequently seen scavenging for scraps of food that polar bears leave behind. This one is just tidying up the site of a bear's ringed seal - breakfast.
