Whilst ashore a leopard seal was spotted prowling near the beach, as Wilson Storm Petrels danced on the sea. Within half an hour the leopard seal's wait proved worthwhile and an unsuspecting penguin became a meal. The contrasts within nature of this beautiful continent are always apparent.
Having sailed to Paradise Harbor during lunch, I wasn't sure the day could get much better. I was wrong!! With wonderful conditions there were many options open to us all this afternoon. As our first chance to lay foot on the Antarctic continent, many went ashore at Almirante Brown, the Argentinean Research Base. I remember it fondly as the first place I was taught the tango by the researchers that worked there. Many of us hiked up to the top of the hill for a panoramic view of the harbor - quite breathtaking. Below, others enjoyed Zodiac cruises and kayakers quietly paddled in the still waters of the bay. A minke whale surfaced just amongst the kayakers - a magical day.
