Rise and shine, early birds! This morning started with a 6:45 a.m. expedition landing craft cruise on the Agujitas River where we enjoyed calm waters, quiet serenity, and lots of birds! Then we all met in the dining room for a delicious breakfast before we left for the Caletas Reserve.
We spent the rest of our morning at Caletas and there were big decisions to be made – should I take a leisurely horseback ride along the beach and into the forest? Should I join one of the naturalists for a long walk through the Reserve? Should I take a shorter stroll around the premises? Or should I just sit in the shade and read a book? Whatever we decided to do, the Reserve did not disappoint us! The pelicans soared overhead in formation. The white faced capuchin monkeys entertained us from the trees. The morpho butterflies dazzled us with their brilliant blue wings. And two bold Macaws squawked and courted to our delight. Then our magical galley staff arrived with lunch and we enjoyed a picnic which ended with our host BamBam opening a coconut using only momentum and a sharp rock.
It was a very full morning but our adventures were only beginning. The afternoon found us at San Pedrillo where we had two fantastic hikes to choose from. Many of us took the hike along the river to the waterfall. We learned about the canopy and the importance of the long vines that hang from the tops of the trees. We saw a resident crocodile and were entertained by spider monkeys leaping from the tree tops. The waterfall at the end of the hike was a spectacular site and the swim in the river pool below the cascades was picturesque and refreshing.
The day ended with a beautiful sunset, a fabulous dinner, and a private concert from some local musicians. It was certainly a most wonderful day in the Tropics!
