Our journey from Svalbard to Bergen is nearly complete. We have gone from the super far north land of ice and bears to the realm of the Vikings. Whales, flowers, seabirds, and Norwegian culture have been some of the highlights. Today, being our last full day onboard, seems at first to be just an ending. But, today was a wonderful day in its own right – spent visiting the Briksdal Glacier.
Shortly after breakfast we made our way up the Olden Valley towards the Briksdal Glacier. This was a land of spectacular scenery. Mirror-like surfaces on the many lakes reflected the high snow covered peaks. More waterfalls cascaded down than one could count. Picturesque farms dotted the landscape, interspersed with dense woodlands. This alone could be the destination for the day. However, it only got better and more gorgeous.
The valley ends at the trail up to the Briksdal Glacier. A wandering path passes by a series of small waterfalls, and then the cloud of mist welcomes us to a huge waterfall. We quickly pass through the spray, and continue higher and higher. All along, photo opportunities are in every direction. Gorgeous flowers line the trail, making great foreground to frame the surrounding glaciers and waterfalls. Every direction is a new and different shot, and was great material to practice all that we learned on this trip. Or, it was wonderful just to enjoy this incredible scenery.
Soon, we arrived at a small lake with a cascading glacier hanging above. This was our destination, and in the sunshine and no wind it was a great place to relax and soak it all in. From here, it was time to retrace our steps and head back down. As the light had changed dramatically, there were more and different photo options. Awaiting our arrival back at the trailhead were delicious treats of Norway that we have so come to enjoy. Finally, it was time to head back through the valley and “home” for a deck barbecue onboard National Geographic Orion.
Today was a certain highlight, amongst many. Stunning scenery, perfect weather, and a comfortable hike was a fitting combination to end this voyage.
