We spent a peaceful night anchored in Magdalena Bay, among the gray whales and everyone was excited about the possibility of encountering some friendly whales and their babies. We started the day on the sundeck greeting the sunrise as we were practicing Yoga and stretching every part of our body, a ritual that many guests had chosen to participate in, very avidly, every morning.
After breakfast, some of us went to the beach on Magdalena Island to walk, run, or follow our naturalist William who shared his deep knowledge about plants and animals of the island. We walked along the beautiful sandy beach all the way to the open Pacific Ocean; we walked across the sand dunes and followed coyote tracks but never got a chance to catch sight of them. The local “pangueros” joined us aboard our expedition landing craft to get an up-close experience with the gray whales.
And indeed the experience was amazing as everyone encountered the friendly mothers and their babies. They seemed to be as eager to connect with humans as we were. The mother and the baby would come close enough to allow us to touch them and they sprayed everyone by blowing hard through their blowholes...everyone was touched deeply by the experience and will go home and share it with all their friends and family.
In the evening, we celebrated the day with live music from “Los Coyotes de Magdalena,” a tres leches Mexican traditional cake, and dancing in the lounge.
What a day! What a week it has been... And tomorrow is another day among our friends the gray whales in beautiful Magdalena Bay.
