The DER below is from the expedition to Cuba that began on February 15, 2017.

Today we woke up with the sun rising behind us. During the night, the Panorama II had sailed mostly due West and parallel to the Canarreos archipelago. We were heading to the largest island of the group, the Island of Youth, where we would spend a whole day.

After the activity-filled days exploring the south central part of Cuba around the Zapata Peninsula and Trinidad, this gave us the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing day at sea. We caught up on photo editing, napping and reading but also learned more about how to take better pictures from Photo Instructor Michael Nolan. Following his excellent talk, we had a hands-on session to learn more about our individual cameras and how to find those hard-to-find settings. No picture-taking device was excluded, from top-of-the-line digital SLRs to smartphones. In fact, many guests wanted to learn how to exploit the amazing photo-taking potential of those great cameras that also make phone calls.

After a splendid buffet lunch, we enjoyed a refreshing nap and later attended a presentation about the great Cuban singer Celia Cruz and how she helped promote Cuban music throughout the world. We also had the chance to watch flying fish, those amazing creatures that take off and glide for several hundred feet or more above the surface before returning to their underwater realm. Watching them "fly" away from the ship was both intriguing and exciting.

Eventually, we arrived at our anchorage off the southwest coast of the Island of Youth. We toasted a spectacular sunset with wine or Cuban rum, and imagined the new experiences that awaited us tomorrow on Cuba's second biggest island.
